Washington, DC — September 10, 2025 — New national results show 12th-grade reading and math scores at historic lows, reflecting challenges that extend far beyond the classroom. While NAEP reports are national snapshots, here in DC we’ve seen encouraging gains on the 2025 state test. Yet too many young people still graduate without the skills they need, especially in math.
At the Washington Literacy Center, we meet these learners where they are. We serve adults 18 and older and families across all eight wards, with special focus east of the river. Our programs not only help adults strengthen their own literacy and numeracy, but also equip parents to support their children’s success through family classes like Support Your Child’s Literacy.
Our immediate response includes:
Expanded assessment and intake days this fall
Enhanced math support for adult learners and parents
Family literacy nights in Wards 7 and 8
“The latest results are a reminder of why we exist,” said Jimmie Williams, President & CEO of WLC. “We cannot let national headlines define DC’s future. Our learners prove every day that with the right support, adults can build new skills, support their families, and strengthen our city.”
