Terrell Danley, Jr.
Senior Director of Programs
As the Senior Director of Programs at the Washington Literacy Center (WLC), Terrell Danley leads the development, expansion, and oversight of WLC’s education and workforce training initiatives. He works closely with instructors, community partners, and learners to design innovative, learner-centered programs that meet the evolving needs of adult learners in the District. From academic instruction to digital and financial literacy, to workforce readiness and hospitality training, Terrell ensures that WLC’s programming remains relevant, impactful, and rooted in opportunity.
Terrell’s path to WLC was shaped by a deep commitment to education, service, and second chances. A proud D.C. native, he spent more than 25 years volunteering with DC Central Kitchen before officially joining the team. During his time there, he served as an instructor, curriculum developer, program manager, and general manager—roles that allowed him to empower adults facing significant barriers to employment. He later co-developed a workforce readiness program for Opportunity Youth at THEARC in Southeast DC and launched the Potomac Job Corps Center’s nationally top-ranked Culinary Arts program as Lead Instructor.
Beyond culinary arts, Terrell brings decades of experience as a junior high and high school math teacher, an adjunct professor, and a workforce development strategist. He is especially passionate about working with disconnected youth and adult learners who need a second shot at success—many of whom have gone on to secure their first living-wage jobs under his guidance.
Terrell is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Urban Leadership and Entrepreneurship at the University of the District of Columbia, where he also earned his M.A. in Adult Education and Lifelong Learning. He lives in Washington, DC, with his wife Portia, their daughter Nina, and their spirited chocolate Cocker Spaniel, Jaxx.
