El Centro de Alfabetización de Washington ha sido un pilar de la educación para adultos en Washington, D.C., durante más de 60 años. Fundado en 1963, el WLC se fundó en respuesta a la apremiante necesidad de alfabetización para adultos en el Distrito, donde miles de residentes enfrentaban importantes obstáculos debido a los bajos niveles de alfabetización. Inicialmente operando como una iniciativa de tutoría voluntaria, el WLC se ha convertido en una institución educativa integral que ofrece programas estructurados y de alta calidad diseñados para dotar a los estudiantes adultos de las habilidades necesarias para el éxito personal y profesional.

Nuestra misión es capacitar a adultos con las habilidades básicas de lectura, matemáticas, digitales y para la vida, necesarias para tener éxito en el mundo laboral actual y en el futuro. Sonia Gutierrez (born July 8, 1939) is a Puerto Rican educator and Hispanic rights activist. She was principal, counselor and advocate for adult students at the @carlosrosarioschool, an adult charter school in Washington, D.C. Gutierrez began her literacy career in the District of Columbia in May 1972 as a counselor of the Program for English Instruction to Latin Americans (PEILA).

In October 1972, Gutierrez was named Director of PEILA by founder Carlos Manuel Rosario. Gutierrez has been involved in the social and economic development of the Latino Community in D.C. In 1977, she founded the Council of Latino Agencies. She was instrumental in establishing the @oladcgov and presided over @fiestadc.

Abel Nuñez is the executive director of CARECEN (Central American Resource Center) in D.C. The center offers a variety of services ranging from legal services that span immigration applications, the naturalization process and residency renewals to English language classes.

Mr. Núñez migrated from El Salvador to the United States with his family in 1979 and grew up in the District of Columbia. He has a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from Hofstra University. His volunteerism reflects his lifelong pursuit of justice and empowerment for immigrants in the district and nation.

Ellen Ochoa (born May 10, 1958) is an American engineer, former astronaut and former director of the Johnson Space Center. In 1993, Ochoa became the first Latina woman to go to space when she served on a nine-day mission aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. Ochoa became director of the center upon the retirement of the previous director, Michael Coats, on December 31, 2012. She was the first Latina director and the second female director of Johnson Space Center.

Mario José Molina-Pasquel Henríquez (March 19, 1943 – October 7, 2020) was a Mexican physical chemist. He played a pivotal role in the discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole, and was a co-recipient of the 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his role in discovering the threat to the Earth’s ozone layer from chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gases. He was the first Mexican-born scientist to receive a Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the third Mexican-born person to receive a Nobel prize.

Without Fear resonates with WLC’s work today: removing barriers, expanding access, and equipping adults of all backgrounds to thrive at home, at work, and in their communities. We’re grateful to Dr. Blain and Politics and Prose for an evening celebrating the power of learning and the people who make change, often quietly, every day.

Yesterday’s national results show high school seniors’ reading and math performance at the lowest point in decades. While DC has made real gains this year, too many students are still leaving school without the skills they need.

That reality shows up at the Washington Literacy Center every day. We serve adults 18 and over and families across all eight wards, with special focus east of the river. Our programs—from adult basic education to family classes like Support Your Child’s Literacy—exist to close these gaps, build independence, and strengthen communities.

We are responding now by expanding assessment and intake days, adding math support, and launching family literacy nights in Wards 7 and 8.
